Welcome in Frýdek-Místek, the Beskydy foothill town on the Ostravice River. The dual town does not have a long history. It was only established in 1943 by merging the independent towns, Moravian Místek and Silesian Frýdek. However, the histories of the original towns date far back. Místek was mentioned for the first time as early as in the 13th century. Frýdek was first mentioned a century later. A recent important date is 1 July 2006 when Frýdek-Místek was declared a statutory city. The present Frýdek-Místek has a population of nearly 61 000 inhabitants. The municipalities of Chlebovice, Zelinkovice, Lysůvky, Lískovec and Skalice are incorporated in it. The total city area is 5 161 hectares.
The city keeps its ancient character thanks to the refurbished city centres - Chateau Square in Frýdek and Liberty Square in Místek, both of which are a part of the city monument zone. One sight sought after by tourists is the Frýdek Chateau, an originally Gothic castle with its core from the middle of the 14th century, which was refurbished from time to time. At present the Beskydy Museum has its headquarters in the Chateau, which offers among others, a permanent exposition of the Beskydy and Beskydy Foothills Region documenting the history and culture of the Beskydy Region.
Frýdek-Místek offers a wide range of leisure time activities. For exercise as well as relaxation, you can go to the Olešná Aquapark with a lot of attractions in the summer including an indoor section or to the indoor swimming pool in Pionýrů Street. Frýdek-Místek also provides the background for horse-riding, tennis, squash, in-line skating and many other sport activities. Cultural events are offered by the National House (Národní dům), the Native Country New Scene (Nová scéna Vlast) and several clubs. You can spend a calmer afternoon at the Frýdecký Forest Educational Trail or a weekend in the Medieval spirit in the Don Quijotte Castle Pension. Summer in Frýdek-Místek is associated with several different festivals. The well-known ones include the traditional International Folk Festival and Beskydské Veseléto. The near vicinity of the city offers a lot of opportunities for hiking and cycling. Walks on well-marked suburb trails lead through attractive places with natural interests, sights and many views of the city. Above the foothills of Kabátice Hill in Chlebovice there is a 22 m high Panorama Outlook Tower. It needs to be added that the outlook tower stands by its name because there are few similar places from where you can see all of Frýdek-Místek as if it were in the palm of your hand.
